Gratitude is more than saying “thank you.” It’s an attitude that helps children appreciate what they have, build empathy, and strengthen relationships. Teaching gratitude in the classroom is a powerful way to support social and emotional wellness. Here are a few simple activities:
1. Gratitude circle
Start or end the day by having each student share one thing they’re thankful for. It can be as simple as a sunny day or a kind friend.
2. Gratitude jar
Place slips of paper and pens in a jar. Encourage students to write down moments of gratitude throughout the week, then read them together on Fridays.
3. Thank-you notes
Guide children in writing short notes of appreciation to classmates, staff, or family members. This reinforces kindness and connection.
4. Gratitude art
Have kids create drawings or posters of things they are thankful for. Displaying their artwork spreads positivity throughout the classroom.
Practicing gratitude helps children focus on the positive, build resilience, and create a culture of kindness. And with Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start.
